Injuries mounting at Mitchell

The losses piled up for Mitchell last week, even after a 32-0 defeat to Nature Coast.

Three starters will miss the last two games of the season with injuries, Mustangs coach Scott Schmitz said.

RB Christian Trinidad broke his nose and sustained his second concussion of the season. The junior leads Mitchell and ranks among Pasco County’s leaders with 785 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

RB/SS Jake Guzman broke his collarbone in the loss and will also miss the rest of the year. The junior racked up 42 tackles and a team-high 4.5 sacks while adding 30 rushing yards.

But the biggest loss could be senior OT Foster Artlip, who tore his ACL. Schmitz said Artlip was having a strong season and cementing himself as a college prospect before going down with a knee injury.

“We’ll have to see what happens,” Schmitz said.

The Mustangs travel to Class 6A, District 6 leaders Springstead this week and host Hernando next week. Mitchell will need to win both games and get some help to have a shot at its first playoff appearance since 2004.
