Northside Christian senior Alex Kruklinski, who won a Class A wrestling state title at 195 pounds in February, verbally committed to Appalachian State, according to his dad, Michael.
The Russian-born New Jersey transfer terrorized the 185-pound weight class early in the season, logging wins at the East Lake Invitational and Jerry Mita tourney. Mustang coach Zach Breitenbach moved him up to 195 pounds midway through the season and Kruklinski went on to win the City Championships, districts, regionals and states. His season record of 39-2 was highlighted by 24 pins.
"Alex is one of the most physically-gifted wrestlers in the country. He's incredibly strong and quick," Breitenbach said. "Beyond his physical talents, he worked hard in the preseason and the season and made tremendous strides in his technique throughout his senior year.
"Having wrestled Division I myself, I know without a doubt that he has everything it takes to be successful at ASU. He will have outstanding coaches there, and it is a great university."
Kruklinski joins a renowned Appalachian State program that has eight Southern Conference titles. Third-year Mountaineer coach JohnMark Bentley was just named the conference Coach of the Year.
