One of two major state bills critical of the Florida High School Athletic Association is unlikely to advance out of its committee.
The Florida Senate Education Committee hasn’t planned any new meetings and doesn’t plan to hear any new legislation, the Times’ Jeffrey Solochek reports on the Gradebook blog. That means Senate Bill 1164 probably will not be heard.
The bill, written by Lakeland Republican Kelli Stargel and filed in February, would have changed the structure of the FHSAA and its board of directors. It would also have assigned more eligibility power to school districts and forced the FHSAA to argue cases in front of a Division of Administrative Hearings judge.
Although Stargel’s bill appears to be stalled, the other, more stringent bill remains alive.
House Bill 1279– written by Lake County Republican Larry Metz – passed its first committee unanimously last month but has not been placed on another agenda yet. Metz’s bill contains many of the same changes as Stargel’s but goes even further on limiting the FHSAA’s investigative powers and controlling its finances.
