TAMPA — Even as he was soaring, skipping and sprinting his way to the unprecedented, Hillsborough senior Jeremiah Green remained unsatisfied.
On a warm, mildly breezy Tuesday at Jefferson High, Green became the first male athlete in the seven-year history of the Vernon Korhn Hillsborough County Championships to win four individual events.
But the Alabama signee’s celebration didn’t commence until well after he had cooled down from the triple jump (meet-record 48 feet), long jump (meet-record 23-9.25), 100 meters (personal-best 10.64 seconds) and 200 (personal-best 21.45).
“I came out here as a team to win a county championship. It hasn’t got anything to do with me,” said Green, who amassed 40 of the Terriers’ 68 points, giving Hillsborough its second team crown in three seasons.
“When I go out of town (for a meet) for myself, then I think about myself. I was thinking about my team today.”
Green was hardly the only athlete to sparkle on a day seemingly hand-crafted for personal records. Whereas last week’s Western Conference division meets were staged amid record-low temperatures, Tuesday’s six-hour event featured record-low times.
Alonso senior William Taylor-Haynes shattered the meet record in the boys 110 hurdles with a time (13.98 seconds) that currently ranks second in the state according to milesplit.com.
“Actually, today I felt it,” said Taylor-Haynes, whose mom, Michelle Taylor, was a multi-event All-American at the University of Southern California. “I was like, ‘Today I need to make sub-14 (seconds),’ and I felt it. I had fresh legs today.”
On the girls side, Plant won its second consecutive team title, setting the tone at the outset with a meet-record time (9:36.06) in the 4x800 relay.
The Panthers would collect 45 of their 92 points in the 1,600 and 3,200, won by Scarlett Fox and Bailey Sullivan, respectively. Senior Caroline Gibson was runnerup in both, and ran the opening leg of the 4x800.
Girls runnerup Wharton was led by the senior hurdles tandem of Mikayla Barber and Tyler Watson, who won the 100 and 300 hurdles, respectively.
Both were runnersup in the hurdles events they didn’t win, and ran legs on the winning 4x400 relay team that set a meet record (3:55.71). Watson, who set a meet mark in the 300 hurdles (43.37), also placed fourth in the triple jump.
Equally versatile and victorious was Hillsborough senior Jorian Ordway, who set a meet record in the 400 (55.59), won the 200 (24.62) and ran a leg on the runnerup 4x400 relay team.
“It was definitely a lot better than the (division) meet, where it was super cold and windy,” said Ordway, a Kent State signee. “There was a high level of competition today and I had to run.”
Elsewhere, Chamberlain senior Andrea Aaron repeated as county champion in the discus and shot put, setting a meet record (41-3) in the latter. Reigning Class 4A state high jump champ Faith Woodard of Freedom also established a meet standard (5-9).
King senior Carrol Hardy broke her own personal and meet mark in the 100 (11.78), while Alonso’s 4x100 team (48.36) also set a Korhn record.
