One state bill critical of the FHSAA is a step closer to becoming law.

House Bill 1279 unanimously passed through the 12-person education appropriations subcommittee Thursday morning. It was unanimously approved by a different subcommittee last month.

That bill, sponsored by Lake County Republican Larry Metz, would limit the Florida High School Athletic Association’s investigative and eligibility powers and overhaul its structure and finances.

The proposal’s next step would be the education committee, which meets again Tuesday. If the bill is heard and passes through that committee, it would have to be approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the governor to become law.
