Class 4A-5
When/where: 3 p.m. today, Clearwater
Teams: Clearwater, Countryside, East Lake, Palm Harbor University, Pinellas Park, Seminole, St. Petersburg
Defending champs: Boys, East Lake; girls, Palm Harbor University
Boys event to watch: 4x400. Countryside and St. Petersburg had one of the closest races at the PCAC meet with the Cougars finishing four-tenths of a second ahead of the Green Devils for first.
Girls event to watch: Pole vault. Countryside’s Mary Margaret Mason and Pinellas Park’s Brittany Galan each cleared 10 feet to finish 2-3 at last week’s PCAC meet. With conference champion Jennifer Kistemaker in another district, the two have a shot to battle for first.
Class 3A-10
When/where: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Gibbs
Teams: Boca Ciega, Dixie Hollins, Dunedin, Gibbs, Largo, Northeast, Osceola, Tarpon Springs
Defending champs: Boys, Gibbs; girls, Osceola
Boys event to watch: 100. The winner is predictable. After all, Gibbs’ Trayvon Bromell has won the event at every meet against county competition. The reason to watch is to see how fast he goes. Last week, he ran the 100 in 10.09 at a meet in Kissimmee.
Girls event to watch: Long jump. Osceola’s Jeanna Cube and Boca Ciega’s Chaise Cook-Martin had nearly identical leaps at last week’s conference meet with both clearing 16-5. Cube ended up winning by the slimmest of a margins — a quarter inch.
