The NCAA's spring signing period dawned — literally — at Jesuit, where seven Tigers student-athletes signed college paperwork at a 7:25 a.m. ceremony in the President's Board Room.
Signing before roughly three-dozen onlookers were (left to right): Benny Ely (Rollins College, baseball), Ryan Brady (Washington and Lee, lacrosse), Cole Fox (Swarthmore College, lacrosse), Devin Harris (East Tennessee State, basketball), J.J. Weir (Rhodes College, basketball), Anthony Sferra (Catholic University, football) and Lucas Trim (Villanova, golf).
The other signee, tennis player David Pagliarulo (St. Joseph's), was competing at the Class 2A state tournament in central Florida and couldn't attend.
Harris and Weir were starting guards on the Tigers' 5A state title team; Harris on Tuesday was named the state's 5A player of the year by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches.
Brady, an attacker/midfielder for the lacrosse team, has amassed more than 60 career goals and 100 career points. Fox is a four-year starting goalie with a 4.0 unweighted GPA.
Sferra was a backup defensive lineman for the Tigers' 7-3 football team; Ely is a reserve right-handed pitcher for the nationally ranked baseball team. Trim boasted the lowest handicap for the golf team last fall, shooting a 2-under 34 at Cheval in Jesuit's triumph in a four-team match against Newsome, Berkeley Prep and Cambridge Christian.
