Freedom sophomore Terese Romeo, who rebounded from wrist surgery to capture district and region titles last season, heads to South Carolina next week for one of junior golf's premier events.
Romeo has been chosen to play in The First Tee Challenge during the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville, S.C., April 24-27.
The reigning Tampa Bay Times girls golfer of the year for Hillsborough County, Romeo is one of 32 participants chosen from East Territory chapters of The First Tee, an international youth organization promoting life skills and leadership through golf.
In addition to competing in The First Tee Challenge, Romeo will serve as a standard bearer -- among other activities -- during the Junior Invitational, held annually for the top 54 juniors from around the globe.
A former gymnast, Romeo underwent right wrist surgery last August and was forced to play her first few nine-hole rounds for Freedom one-handed last season. She eventually won Class 2A district and region crowns and placed 11th at the state tournament.
