At Durant, the top-seeded Cougars spent a muggy Friday afternoon finishing off what they started on a rainy Thursday night — a shutout of sixth-seeded Wharton in the Class 8A, District 7 final.
Senior ace Paige Davis tossed a five-hitter and had the official winning RBI to lead the reigning state champions (19-8) to a 5-0 victory. The triumph was Durant’s 10th in a row against district opposition after losing its first two 8A-7 games.
The contest was halted Thursday night by heavy rain and a popped breaker in a panel of lights along the third-base line. When it resumed Friday, the Cougars were batting with two out and a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
