East Bay baseball coach steps down

East Bay coach Bill Colome has announced his resignation following a 4-19 season, according to the school’s athletic director.

Colome went 34-103 in six seasons with the program, never winning more than seven games in a season and never losing fewer than 16.  The Indians’ season ended Monday in the quarterfinals of the District 7A-8 tournament, a 5-4 loss to Plant City.

“I resign today … because my life has taken a different direction,” Colome said in a written statement released Thursday. “This decision is best for my family and the program, as well.”

A 1995 graduate of Miami Southridge, Colome played at the College of Charleston and earned third-team Division I All-America honors as a middle infielder in 1999. He signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Indians in ’99, and spent parts of three years in pro baseball before his release.

Colome later worked as an assistant at Southridge, helped out with the East Bay Little League and served two years as a junior varsity assistant at East Bay before accepting the head coaching job in 2007.
