Gibbs sprinting sensation Trayvon Bromell was summoned to the front office upon his arrival at school Wednesday.

“I was scared,” Brommell said. “I thought I was in trouble or something.”

He was asked to sign off on a FedEx package. Inside was his invitation via a golden ticket to run in the Adidas Grand Prix Dream 100, a prestigious event that brings together the top high school sprinters in the nation to compete in a 100 meter race.

The race will be May 25 at Icahn Stadium in New York.

“Once I saw the package and Adidas was on the side of it, I had a pretty good idea what it was,” Bromell said. “This is everything I’ve been working for.”

So far, only two other sprinters have been invited, Orlando Jones’ Levonte Whitfield and Point Ridge, Texas’ Cameron Burrell.

Whitfield is the defending champion and the event’s first three-time invitee. Burrell, whose father is former world record holder Leroy Burrell, has the fastest wind-aided time this season (10.07 seconds).

Bromell said he most likely got the invitation based on his performance at the Class 3A region meet last week, when he won the 100 in 10.14, currently the fastest non-wind-aided time in the nation this season.

“I was trying to get a time fast enough to get me invited,” Bromell said. “I think that’s what did it, that’s what punched my ticket to New York.”
