Relying more on depth than a dynamic individual performance, Berkeley Prep's boys won the Class 1A, District 7 swim meet Friday evening at its own pool.
The Terrapins took home the girls team title and captured five of the six relays on a windy west Tampa evening. Tampa Prep's 548 girls points were 63 more than runner-up Berkeley Prep. The Buccaneers boys scored 542.5 for a convincing win against the Terrapins (447).
"It's overall a really, really great meet for the team," Tampa Prep coach Jason Bowes said. "We graduated 12 seniors last year, so to come back and do what we did is pretty impressive."
Tampa Prep freshman Hannah Fredlake (500-yard freestyle, 200 free) and Berkeley sophomore Elle Chancey 50 free, 100 free) each won two individual titles, while Terps freshman Savannah Savitt won the 100 breaststroke in a time (1:07.94) that Bowes said was two-tenths of a second shy of the school record.
By contrast, Berkeley's boys won no events, but gathered dozens of points in races such as the 500 free, where Thomas Mayer, Harrison Keane, Kyle Campbell and Brandon Nally placed second through fifth, respectively.
Terrapins junior Rasmus Skjaerpe, a 2011 state medalist in two events, won the boys 200 free and 100 butterfly.
Clearwater Central Catholic sophomore Emma Spilman (girls 200 IM, 100 fly) was the night's other individual multi-champion.
