Pinellas Park boys basketball coach Jon Cabino has stepped down to pursue coaching opportunities in college.
Cabino coached the Patriots for five seasons. He will continue teaching at the school.
“I just got engaged, and this was something I wanted to do to see if I can make more money coaching in college to help support a family,” Cabino said. “It’s tough to keep doing it at the high school level and put in the hours that we do and make what we make.”
Cabino coached in the county for 13 seasons, including six as an assistant at Clearwater before taking over Pinellas Park. This offseason, the Patriots lost their two best returning players with Brandon Jones transferring to Largo and Nick Preradovic transferring to Oldsmar Christian.
“I would have made this move even if they were returning,” Cabino said. “Whoever takes over will still have a good group to work with. I’m just looking at the future and where I want to be 10 years down the road in coaching.”
