Score: Berkeley Prep 35, AFA 6

Spring game-breakers: Berkeley Prep QB Brad Mayes had a shortened spring football season because he also plays on the baseball team, but Mayes didn’t show much rust. He threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns and ran for an 18-yard score. … Buccaneers LB John Kastrenakes had the defensive play of the game when he returned an interception 77 yards in the second quarter. … Bucs TE Jared Shimberg established himself as a go-to receiver for Mayes, catching three passes for 41 yards and setting up two touchdowns. … Napoleon Maxwell was a bright spot for the Blue Jackets. He played well on defense and had his team’s only score, a 33-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Did you know? This was the debut for AFA coach Buster Davis. He had only two weeks of spring practice and only 24 players available against Berkeley Prep. Among those, only 19 saw playing time Thursday. … Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano was at the game to watch son Joe, a tight end and linebacker for Berkeley Prep. … AFA QB Dalton Collins is a transfer from Tarpon Springs. He was 11-for-24 with an interception and 58 yards passing. He played the entire game.

Audible 1:“We think (Mayes) is special, and tonight he did a lot of special things. We didn’t have a lot of (plays) in but he still made a lot of big plays for us. One thing we wanted was for our team to play hard, and I thought we did. I’m proud of the way we ran the ball and tackled on defense. What we wanted to establish in the spring was running the football and tackling and we did that pretty well.”— Berkeley Prep coach Dominick Ciao

Audible 2:“I’m proud of my kids to the utmost. We’re going to be very good. (Berkeley) had to go into the fourth quarter to get that 35 (points). For us, we only played 19 people, and for playing 19 people, I’m very proud of them.” — Davis
