East Lake and Berkeley Prep have been named FHSAA Academic Team Champions for posting the best cumulative student-athlete grade point averages in their respective classifications for the 2012-13 school year.
The academic team championship is determined over the course of the school year. The school with the highest cumulative team GPA in each of the FHSAA's 22 sanctioned and eight recognized sports receives 10 points, with the runnerup earning nine, etc.
East Lake finished with 144 points to lead all Class 8A schools. This past spring alone, the Eagles boasted the state's top 8A team GPA in boys tennis (3.803) and boys track and field (3.458), and the second-best GPA in baseball (3.436) and girls track (3.480).
Berkeley Prep, the 4A winner, earned 163 points. The Buccaneers finished the spring with the top team GPA for their classification in baseball (3.590), softball (3.814) and boys volleyball (3.700). It's the third straight year Berkeley has won.
