When Armwood’s first-team defense completed its goal-line stand with a fourth-and-2 stop to conclude Friday evening’s intrasquad scrimmage, rising junior defensive end Byron Cowart was lined up at nose guard.
Cowart (6-foot-5, 250 pounds), shaping up as the area’s top recruit from the Class of 2015, said he’s hopeful of sliding inside periodically during the season.
“I’m always there, right on the ball, and I’m only going left or right unless we do a little stunt,” said Cowart, who has seven SEC offers. “I like being physical. At linebacker, I’ve got to wait a little bit, but the D line is physical every play.”
Scrimmage standouts
Many county teams staged full-uniform intrasquad scrimmages — the practice games before the practice games — before modest audiences over the weekend. Here are some of the notable performances:

WR Brandon Robinson, Alonso: three receptions 121 yards, one TD
PK Rhett Waldron, Jesuit: 50-yard field goal
RB Ish Witter, Alonso: 20 carries, 207 yards (rising sophomore RB Kelvin Clemmons had 76 yards on 10 carries)
