At Calvary Christian
Score: Cambridge 27, Calvary 21
Spring game-breakers: Calvary rising junior Jeremy Wood has a tandem of tight ends who should be the envy of the district. Rising junior Wes Vollmer and rising senior Gage Plentovich hauled in touchdown catches during the first half. ...Plentovich made an overhead basket catch and streaked in for a 53-yarder. Wood’s touchdown pass to Vollmer, which capped the Warriors’ first drive, came after he read the defense, faked the handoff and went over the top. Wood finished 10-of-14 for 128 yards and two scores. ...Rising senior Zach Walters was a spark plug for Calvary, finishing with 60 yards of offense. More important, he recorded five first downs, including the game’s first four plays from scrimmage. ...The Cambridge defense had spells of stoutness with rising senior Lloyd Woods and rising sophomore Trent Puleo forming what coach Bob Dare calls, “the heart and soul of our defense.” Both had multiple tackles-for-loss. Puleo also caught a touchdown.
Did you know? Cambridge graduated only three players from last season: Robbie Robertson, Brandon Park and Daniel Selvia. It will have just five seniors in the fall.
Audible 1: “I couldn’t really see (the ball) because my body was blocking it. I just threw my hands up, and it was there.” — Plentovich on his touchdown catch
Audible 2: “We’ve got to get better. We’ve got to get a lot better. But I don’t want anyone to get discouraged — even with that guy (Calvary 300-plus pound backup tackle Antonio Spanolios) that wants to eat us over there.” — Dare
