A spotlight on the Times’ bay area player of the week.
Male Hot Shot: Paxton Sims, Jr., Durant
Sport: Baseball
Skinny: The outfielder turned in a nearly-flawless performance at the plate in the state tournament, disproving dismissive comments that the Cougars were a “one-man team” led by senior ace Tyler Danish. Sims went 6-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs in Durant’s two games at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. In a 6-3 loss to Lake Brantley in the Class 8A championship, Sims paced the Cougars’ offense by going 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. He finished the season hitting .321 with a team-leading five doubles and 19 RBIs, which ranked second on the team. Sims will also play receiver/tight end and defensive back for the football team in the fall.
Note: This is our final winner of the 2012-13 school year. Girls sports wrapped up two weeks earlier than the boys so there is no girls winner.
