Coming off her freshman season with Nicholls State (La.) University, former Bishop McLaughlin standout Spencer Valdespino was named to the All-Southland Conference team as an honorable mention Tuesday.
One season after leading the Hurricanes to a state playoff berth as a senior, Valdespino signed with the Colonels and made an impact immediately. She was also the only Nicholls State player to make any of the All-Southland Conference teams.
Valdespino broke school records for shots in a season (76), shots per game (4.22), shots on goal (39) and shots on goal per game (2.17) while finishing tied for third all-time for assists (five), as she and teammate Annie Newell tied for sixth for most goals in a season (five).
Valdespino led the conference in shots and shots per game, averaging nearly one more shot per game than second place. Her assist totals were good enough for fourth in the league.
Nicholls finished the year 5-12 overal, setting a team milestone for wins on the road with four.
