Carrollwood Day two-sport standout Adonis Welch, a 6-foot-8, 260-pound senior whose presence at defensive end and left tackle opened eyes at spring practice in May, has transferred to Oldsmar Christian.
Also a Division I prospect in basketball, Welch's withdrawal from CDS was confirmed by athletic director/boys basketball coach Baker Mabry. Oldsmar boys coach Jordan Fair later confirmed that Welch had enrolled at his school.
An honorable-mention pick on the Tampa Bay Times' all-Hillsborough County team this past winter, Welch had at least one Division I hoops offer (Rider), though Mabry said Welch told him Jacksonville also had offered.
He bypassed the 2012 football season, presumably to focus on basketball, but returned for spring drills last month. As a sophomore, he registered 31 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and blocked punt. Weeks ago, Coach Lane McLaughlin lauded Welch's agility and physical upside, and called his football potential "untapped."
