Berkeley Prep G/F Justin Gray, who owns more than a dozen offers from Division I and Ivy League programs, said Monday night Butler currently tops his collegiate wish list.
Gray, who participated in a local all-star game Monday night in Berkeley's gym, said he also has offers from Houston, James Madison, Florida Gulf Coast, Boston University and at least four Ivy League programs. FGCU also is "pretty big" on his list, he added.
But three factors, Gray said, have propelled Butler ahead of the others: the steady outreach shown by Coach Brad Stevens and his staff, Gray's familiarity with the Indianapolis campus, and the fact longtime friend Devontae Morgan plays for the Bulldogs.
Morgan, a former Tampa Prep star, was a teammate of Gray's on the Florida Select travel team.
"They're just making sure they keep in contact with me," said Gray, who estimates he hears from Stevens' staff every two or three days. "So I really appreciate that."
A two-time first-team all-county pick by the Tampa Bay Times, Gray (6-foot-5, 195 pounds) led the Buccaneers in points (15.0 ppg) and rebounds (7.9 rpg) and ranked second in assists (3.1) last season, helping guide Berkeley (22-8) to the Class 4A region finals.
He averaged 19.6 points and 7.2 boards as a sophomore, when the Buccaneers reached the 4A final four. An honors student with a 3.8 GPA, he said he hopes to make a handful of visits in September.
