We're featuring some of our HomeTeam 100 players, including our No. 83 player, Fivay RB Davion Sutton:
Davion Sutton entered Fivay with small expectations and an even smaller frame. He was a 5-foot-2, 139-pound freshman at a new program with no history.
“People doubted me,” Sutton said, “but I knew I could do it.”
Sutton (now 5-11, 195) — after a couple growth spurts — proved himself as a junior, becoming one of the North Suncoast’s top rushers. His breakout season featured 1,100 yards and 16 touchdowns for a Falcons team that came within a quarter of its second straight playoff appearance. That success attracted interest from Florida Atlantic, Ball State and others while boosting the pressure on him this fall.
“He’s going to have to carry a load that probably he wasn’t accustomed to last year…” Fivay coach Chris Taylor said. “He’s going to have to be the big guy and understand we’re going to have to lean on him.”
That’s because his team’s situation has changed.
Fivay has jumped up a classification to 6A. Its offensive line has been rebuilt. One of Pasco County’s top passing games lost quarterback Tyler Degen and WR Andrew Meyer to graduation and up-and-coming receiver JoJo Schumacher, who recently moved to Connecticut.
That leaves a faster, bulked-up Sutton with more expectations to heap on his shoulders.
“It’s a lot of pressure,” Sutton said. “I know that.”
