We're featuring some of our HomeTeam 100 players, including our No. 60 player, Tampa Catholic LB Tre Watson:

His numbers last year seem almost impossible to repeat.

Can Tre Watson really post 161 tackles again, 25 for losses?

Can Tre Watson really register 16.5 sacks again?

Can Tre Watson really be …better?

“Every year you want to get better and improve. I improved drastically from my sophomore year to last year,’’ Watson said. “And I developed my game more over the spring and summer, so I can reach those numbers and surpass them.’’

Watson (6-2, 230) was a disruptive force last year for Tampa Catholic. He used his natural ability to blow up offensive linemen, sink running backs and sack quarterbacks.

This year, he has added some size, speed and new moves to try out on would-be blockers.

“Last year, I used speed or just hustled to get to the quarterback,’’ he said. “This year, I plan on becoming more of a true pass rusher.”

When he’s not harassing quarterbacks, Watson will be catching passes from his own, Kyle Ploucher. As a tight end, Watson is a very good blocker with soft hands. He caught a touchdown in the spring against Newsome and had a nice 7-on-7 campaign.

His skill set and aggressiveness have netted a handful of college offers, USF, UCF and Illinois included.

But before heading off to the next level, he has unfinished business at this one.

“Expectations are definitely sky high over here,’’ Watson said. “We have athletes all over the field, and some guys people haven’t even heard of yet. We haven’t won our district in two years, so we’re definitely looking to bring that back. And after that, a state championship.”
