We're featuring some of our HomeTeam 100 players, including our No. 47 player, East Lake DB Devin Abraham:

A two-year starter, Abraham has blended smarts, instincts and athletically divine DNA to become one of the area’s best cover cornerbacks.

Abraham, the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers standout and current Clearwater coach Donnie Abraham, has improved each season. Last year, he had 67 tackles and tied for the team lead in interceptions with four as he helped the Eagles advance to the Class 8A region final for the second straight season.

“We had some young guys who were new on defense, and we struggled at times at the beginning of the season,” Abraham said. “I still felt like I did some good things. I don’t know if it was my best season, but it was productive.”

This season, Abraham (5-10, 180) has the most experience of any returner in the secondary and will be counted on to provide plays — and leadership — on a unit that should continue to make strides. He already has his college plans set after committing to USF last month.

“I’m 100 percent on my decision to go to USF,” Abraham said. “I have that out of the way so I can concentrate on what I need to do to make this our best season yet.”

Though he has followed the pedigree, Abraham has taken steps to step out of his father’s shadow,  wearing No. 23 instead of the No. 21 his father wore in the NFL. Still, the two have plenty of family discussions related to football.

“I’ll ask my dad questions about a coverage or a formation,” Abraham said. “He’ll ask me how he can teach something to his players so that they’ll understand. It’s a real good relationship.”
