Both swim teams from Land O’Lakes and Mitchell shattered school records in top-five showings in Thursday’s Class 2A, Region 2 meet in Orlando.
“It was a record-breaking day,” Gators girls coach Robin Hilgenberg said. “It was crazy.”
Land O’Lakes’ girls team led the way with a third-place finish. Krystin Demsher took first in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly, and junior Jocelyn Williams won the 200 individual medley and placed third in the 100 breaststroke. The Gators won the 200 free relay with a school record.
Cameron Hilgenberg set a school record in the 50 free and took second in the 100 breast. Jordan Wheeler broke two other Land O’Lakes records in the 100 fly and 200 individual medley in the Gators’ fourth-place team finish.
Mitchell’s boys and girls both finished fifth.
Senior Amanda Maser earned a region championship in diving, and LSU commit Devin McCaffrey added a region title in the 100 breast (58.95) and took second in the 100 fly.
Freshman Jordan Thielbar broke school’s girls record in the 200 free (2:00.81) and 500 free (5:28.50), and standout sophomore won the 50 free (23.98) and 100 free (53.95) with two Mustangs records.
Sophomore Jake Williams (200 free) and freshman Kevin Smith (100 back) also set records and joined relay teams that had the fastest finishes in Mitchell history.
“Unbelievable,” Mustangs coach Scott Hernon said.
