The 1-2 finish of Plant seniors Bailey Sullivan and Anna Montgomery helped propel the Panthers to a team title in the girls elite race at Saturday morning's Newsome Invitational in Lithia.
The event, which attracted roughly three-dozen teams, featured boys and girls races in "Elite" and "Varsity" categories. Sullivan (19:38.30) and Montgomery (19:42.60) were the only girls in either race to eclipse 20 minutes.
The Panthers, seeking their 27th consecutive team berth in the state meet, finished with 100 points as its top five runners all placed in the top 36. North Port (136) was second.
In the boys elite race, Jesuit senior Tim O'Loughlin placed third (16:56) -- roughly seven seconds ahead of Robinson's Fredrick Stanford -- to lead the local competitors. Sarasota Riverview's Blake Riley (16:51.40) and Warran Grajalez (16:54.50) placed first and second, respectively, for the Rams, who won the team title (63).
