Aaron Murray's dissection Saturday of South Carolina's defense eclipsed just about every other noteworthy Bulldogs effort, including Ramik Wilson's.
The former Jefferson standout -- now a Dawgs junior -- had nine tackles (one that contributed to a loss) and a pass breakup in Georgia's 41-30 romp of USC. In two games, Wilson ranks second on the team with 22 tackles.
As for Murray, his 244.2 pass-efficiency rating and sparkling numbers (17-for-23, 309 yards, four TDs) earned him Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week honors. The former Plant High star now is second on Georgia's alltime total yardage list (10,907).
Also shining on a national TV stage were Miami sophomore Tyriq McCord (Jefferson) and junior Anthony Chickillo (Alonso), who accounted for the Hurricanes' two sacks of Jeff Driskel in their 21-16 victory against Florida.
McCord also had a forced fumble, fumble recovery and pass breakup. Chickillo finished with five total tackles.
Farther north, Mississippi State redshirt freshman Brandon Holloway (Alonso) led the Bulldogs with 148 all-purpose yards -- including a 95-yard kick return -- in MSU's 51-7 thrashing of Alcorn State. Holloway, a former Ravens 100- and 200-meter star, also had two catches for 25 yards.
“He has a lot of speed and he is an electric player in the open field," Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen said. "We want to make sure we get him in the open field and we were able to do that today. We’ve seen that in practice from him, so we know he can make big plays."
Youngstown State freshman Martin Ruiz (Robinson) notched his first 100-yard effort in only his second college game, collecting 117 yards and two TDs on only six carries in the Penguins' 67-13 rout of Morehead State.
Ruiz's scoring runs covered 14 and 41 yards. "Martin's a talented guy," YSU coach Eric Wolford said. "He runs low, he runs physical, he can hit the home-run ball."
Another local back, Furman fourth-year junior Hank McCloud (Tampa Catholic), ran for a career-best 133 yards on 21 carries in his team's 35-28 loss to Coastal Carolina.
Other notable efforts: Kansas sophomore Schyler Miles (Berkeley Prep) had three tackles in the Jayhawks' win vs. South Dakota. ... Purdue DB Frankie Williams (Robinson) had a 14-yard punt return, two tackles and a blocked punt in the Boilermakers' win against Indiana State. ... Michigan State senior Denzel Drone (Plant City) had five tackles in the Spartans' 21-6 victory against USF.
