A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.
Male Hot Shot: Anthony Swinford, Mitchell
Sport: Golf
Skinny: Swinford has been one of the North Suncoast’s top golfers throughout his career with the Mustangs. As a freshman in 2011, he shot 73 at districts to win individual medalist honors. Last year, he earned all-conference honors while helping his Mustangs win the district team title. Now as a junior, Swinford is establishing himself as one of Pasco County’s top players. His 2-under 34 led Mitchell to a win in a three-team match against Wiregrass Ranch and Gulf. The Mustangs shot a school-record 149 as a team and extended their win streak to 29 matches. Swinford hasn’t shot above a 39 in any of his three matches this fall.
Female Hot Shot: Victoria Alexander, St. Petersburg
Sport: Volleyball
Skinny: The Green Devils (6-2) are off to a hot start, and this senior right side hitter is a big reason why. In a match against Palm Harbor University on Tuesday, Alexander had 15 kills, three aces and six digs in a five-game win. She averages three kills per game and 9.3 digs per match. “Tori is an aggressive, competitive player who you want to get the ball in a clutch situation,” coach Alex Sevillano said. “She’s been a varsity starter since her freshman year but this is the first time that we have beaten PHU during her career. Her drive and commitment have played a huge role in getting us to this level.”
