Entering his first postseason, Carrollwood Day senior Robert Davis finds himself two-thirds of a football field from history.
According to Patriots coach Lane McLaughlin, Davis needs 66 yards in CDS' home playoff opener -- Nov. 16 against Moore Haven -- to become Hillsborough County's alltime leading rusher.
A University of Cincinnati commitment, Davis ran for 299 yards on 34 carries in the Patriots' playoff-clinching victory Friday at Calvary Christian. The effort, his eighth of 150 or more yards this season, gives him 1,901 for the year.
Davis entered his final season needing 1,966 to surpass former Riverview standout Avious Steadman's record total (5,320), amassed from 1998-2001. Davis has compiled his total in three seasons.
Davis' statistics are provided by CDS coaches, who post them weekly on the MaxPreps high school sports website. The Times reported Davis had 246 yards on 33 carries Friday, but McLaughlin said a review of the game tape showed he had 53 more.
Subtract the 53 yards from Davis' Friday total, and he'd need 119 against Moore Haven to eclipse the record. He has run for at least 130 in every game he has played at tailback this season.
Davis' pursuit of Steadman appeared in peril when he suffered a meniscus injury midway through the Patriots' 36-29 loss at Admiral Farragut in late September. He finished with 130 yards in that game and didn't carry the ball the following week against Canterbury.
But he has run for 299 yards in two of his last three games, according to McLaughlin, to again put himself within striking distance of Steadman.
