Cobi Johnson signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Florida State on Friday in Mitchell’s cafeteria.

“I just love the atmosphere,” Johnson said of FSU. “The coaches, the facilities — all of it.”

The 6-foot-4 senior committed after his sophomore season. Johnson was named player of the year by the Sunshine Athletic Conference that year, when he batted .426.

He earned his place as one of the area’s top players during his junior year, when he posted a 1.68 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 71 innings.

He was one of 36 athletes from the United States, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic invited to play in the Under Armour All-America baseball game in August at Wrigley Field.

Athletic director Ian Mooney said having a D-I athlete helps Mitchell’s programs gain recognition. “It certainly puts us on the map,” he said.

Mitchell coach Scot Wilcox said Johnson’s parents deserve a lot of credit, because by the time Wilcox met him as a freshman, Johnson already had the discipline to reach this point.

“He definitely has all the tools any athlete could want,” Wilcox said. “He has all the tools any student could want.”
