Each week, our HomeTeam staffers will nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover, then we turn the voting over to our readers. These nominations span Saturday, Nov. 23 through Friday, Nov. 29. The winners get a free T-shirt and bragging rights over every other school in the area. Read up on what made our nominees stand out, then vote until noon Monday.
Female nominees
Kendall Catone, Holy Names soccer: The freshman had 10 saves in the Jaguars’ 1-0 win against Berkeley Prep on Monday. Catone has 68 saves on the season and five shutouts for the Jaguars (9-0).
Amber Jennings, Palm Harbor University basketball: The East Lake transfer is fitting in just fine for the Hurricanes. She scored a team-high 19 points in a 61-49 win over North Port on Friday night in the Sarasota Shootout.
Amanda Melosky, Wiregrass Ranch basketball: In two big wins against Hillsborough County foes, the junior was the Bulls’ leading scorer. She tallied 26 points against Holy Names and 15 vs. Tampa Catholic.
Dominique Nelson, East Lake soccer: In the Nike Thanksgiving tournament final, the midfielder prevented a potential tying goal in the final two minutes by diving in front of the net. The ball ricocheted off her body to sail wide, preserving a 2-1 victory over Flagler Palm Coast.
Anna Poholek, Springstead basketball: In a 47-40 win over Hudson, the senior notched a double double — scoring a team-best 18 points with 13 rebounds.
Sabrina Whiting, Seffner Christian basketball: The senior guard had 17 points and shot 64 percent from the floor in the Crusaders’ 52-19 win against Holy Names. Whiting is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13 points per game.
Male nominees
Patrick Brooks, Plant football: The running back had a pair of touchdowns — on a 29-yard reception and an 11-yard run — in the Panthers’ 17-7 region final win against Fort Pierce Central. He finished with 137 yards on the ground.
Ryan Davis, Lakewood football: The quarterback was highly efficient in the Spartans’ 27-21 Class 5A region final win over South Sumter. He completed 20-of-29 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two scores to help Lakewood win its first region final.
Carson Emery, Wesley Chapel basketball: The four-year starter dominated the court in Monday’s win over Anclote, leading both teams in points (18), 3-pointers (three) and free throws (3-of-4). The senior added 11 points and five assists the next night in a win over Zephyrhills.
Tristan Hart, Wiregrass Ranch soccer: Hart scored the final goal against Sunlake to give the Bulls a 2-2 tie against one of the top programs in the area. It was Hart’s fourth goal this season and moved the Bulls to 5-0-1.
Jake Hudson, East Lake football: The quarterback had his best game of the season, completing 14-of-16 passes for 195 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-15 victory over Port Charlotte to lead the Eagles to their first state semifinal appearance.
Noah Johnson, Armwood football: The quarterback had four touchdowns — three through the air and one on the ground — in the Hawks’ 41-0 win against Springstead on Friday. Johnson had 251 passing yards.
