A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.
Female Hot Shot: Jordan Berenbaum, St. Petersburg
Sport: Basketball
Skinny: Berenbaum, a senior, is off to a fast start for the 8-0 Green Devils. She scored 18 points against Boca Ciega and followed that with 18 more against Northeast. She scored the first six points against the Vikings in what turned out to be a 61-29 win. The 6-foot Berenbaum is a tough defender and has one of the smoothest jump shots in the area. “Jordan is good at giving our team a lift," St. Petersburg coach Tamika Coley said. “She can get hot and then she becomes very hard to stop."
Male Hot Shot: Jordan Griffin, Armwood
Sport: Football
Skinny: Hawks coach Sean Callahan routinely calls Griffin, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior linebacker, one of his team’s top players and unsung heroes. “Jordan Griffin is playing at a very high level right now,” Callahan said. Griffin certainly did Friday night. He picked off Bartram Trail on the Bears’ first offensive play and returned it for his second touchdown of the year. Griffin also had a sack and ran down Bears quarterback PJ Blazejowski on a key third-down stop in a 35-28, triple-overtime win. Griffin leads the Hawks with 13.2 tackles per game while adding six sacks for one of the state’s top defenses.
