TEAM OF THE NIGHT
The Clearwater girls lost their longtime coach Tom Shaneyfelt during the offseason, but they haven't missed a beat. The Tornadoes improved to 11-0 under first-year coach Paul Lang, beating Countryside 36-24. Only three players scored for Clearwater -- Alex Alford (17), Deja Blunt (14) and Madison Rubino (5) -- but the Tornadoes rolled to another win.
PLAYER OF THE NIGHT
Meagan Thomas is on fire. The Dixie Hollins senior, one of Pinellas County's most prolific all-time scorers with more than 1,500 points, dropped in 37 to lead the Rebels to a 71-51 win over Springstead Monday night. Thomas is averaging 22.9 points a game, despite shooting just 32 percent (she's not shy). It is her second straight 30-point game, and the 21st of her career. The Rebel standout was coming off a season-high 39-point effort in a loss to Lakewood last week. In that game, Thomas went to the line 31 times, making 19.
NOTABLE
Indian Rocks Christian senior Ryan Ferguson hit the 1,000-point mark for his career in an overtime win for the boys over Northside Christian. Hat tip to @PiCoSportsFan. Also, East Lake's Emily Dine, who led the Eagles with 17 points Monday night, broke the 1,000-point barrier last week as well. Congrats to both.
PATS-TO-BACK
The Freedom girls lost to Sickles on Monday night, their second straight defeat against Tampa Bay competition, something that did not happen last year. You can blame it on bad second quarters. In a 70-58 loss to Wiregrass Ranch last week, the Bulls outscored the Patriots 21-10, and Monday night Sickles used an 18-8 second quarter to take a halftime lead.
COACHES KIDS COLLISION
Autumn Frost -- which for this Wisconsin boy is hands down the greatest name in girls high school basketball today -- scored 18 for Indian Rocks Christian, and Ryanne Jackson led Northside Christian with 10. We know why they're both pretty good basketball players -- Frost is the daughter of IRC boys basketball coach Joe, and Jackson is the daughter of D.J., the girls basketball coach at Northside Christian.
