Antez Brinson has resigned as Boca Ciega football coach, according to school principal Michael Vigue.

“I can confirm that he has resigned to spend more time with his family,’’ Vigue said. “It’s a lot of work for about four cents an hour. He’s a good guy.’’

Vigue would not comment on whether he was surprised by Brinson’s resignation. Calls and texts to Brinson were not returned.

Brinson, 33, recently completed his third season at Boca Ciega after taking over for Stevie Thomas. In his three seasons, the Pirates were 12-18, including 3-7 this season.

Prior to joining Boca Ciega, Brinson was an assistant coach at Lakewood for 6 1/2 years. He also played at Lakewood, and for Troy and Florida A&M. Vigue said Brinson will remain at the school as a social studies teacher.

The Pirates were outscored 278-126 this season and gave up 34 points or more in a game four times, including 67 to Tarpon Springs in the second to last game of the season.

Vigue said the application process for a new coach will continue until around Jan. 9. The last time there was a coaching vacancy, Vigue received 90 applications.
