Soccer super 7
Records through Monday
Boys
1. East Lake (10-1): Eagles played Osceola on Tuesday and play at Palm Harbor University on Friday before the holiday break. East Lake will have to be road warriors the rest of the season. Its field is under repair for the winter.
2. St. Petersburg (8-1): The Green Devils stubbed their toe by giving up three goals in six minutes in a 3-2 loss to Northeast a few weeks ago. But striker Junior Francis is back from a knee injury and the remaining schedule is relatively easy.
3. Northeast (6-1-2): Vikings have a knack for second-half comebacks. They beat St. Petersburg, then did the same to Seminole in a 4-3 comeback win. Never count Northeast out for the rest of the season.
4. Clearwater (7-3-2): Tornadoes are going to be a pain for opponents; their only Pinellas loss was the opener against East Lake. A district game at Seminole awaits tonight.
5. Shorecrest (11-2-1): The one-two punch of freshman Taylor DeGeare (10 goals) and senior Robert Zolper (nine goals) have the Chargers way out in front in Class A-6.
6. St. Petersburg Catholic (5-2-2): Barons have been consistent all season and still have room to improve. Class 2A-9 is wide open, so Thursday’s game against Tampa Catholic is big.
7. Palm Harbor University (5-4): Hurricanes are in a very tough district that includes Steinbrenner, East Lake and Plant. Friday’s game against East Lake will be a good gauge for PHU.
Girls
1. Palm Harbor University (9-0-4): The Hurricane defense has been stellar, allowing just three goals all season. That has helped PHU’s offense, which has had just five games in which it has scored three or more goals.
2. Seminole (17-2-1): Thanks to a young, fast attack, the Warhawks are rolling with their only losses coming in tournaments. Gabrielle John, a freshman, leads the team with 18 goals.
3. Osceola (9-2): The Warriors are still a threat to make the postseason. Their only losses are to Seminole and PHU; they beat East Lake on Tuesday.
4. East Lake (11-3-2): Last month, the Eagles won a Thanksgiving tournament, beating Flagler Palm Coast in the final. On Friday, East Lake has its biggest test with a showdown against district rival PHU.
5. Shorecrest (14-2): The Chargers have been the most dominant private-school program in the county, outscoring opponents a combined 59-8.
6. Largo (7-5-4): The Packers have played well lately against some of the top private schools with ties against Berkeley Prep and Clearwater Central Catholic.
7. Clearwater (4-4-2): After a strong start, the Tornadoes have slipped a little with losses to Osceola, Tarpon Springs and PHU in the past week.
