Dunedin’s Denis Gillen was fired as football coach less than six months after taking the job.
Gillen, who went 1-9 in his only season as coach, said in a text message Tuesday night that he was asked by Dunedin principal Reuben Hepburn to resign. Gillen said he would not, then was fired. A call to Hepburn for comment was not returned.
On June 28, Gillen was promoted from offensive assistant to head coach. He replaced Max Smith, who left to become a graduate assistant at the University of Toledo. Smith recommended Gillen for the job.
Gillen took over the Falcons five weeks before practice began. After beating Dixie Hollins 42-41 in the season opener, the Falcons lost nine straight and were outscored 428-62 during the season.
