Basketball super 7
Records through Wednesday
1. Palm Harbor University (12-0): Biggest test to date will come next week at the Queen of Palms tournament in Fort Myers. Hurricanes are in a tough bracket that starts with Lakewood Ranch.
2. St. Petersburg (12-1): The lone loss came against PHU on a night when the Green Devils didn’t shoot very well. They are also in the Queen of Palms over the break, so the Green Devils will get a good gauge of where they stand.
3. Clearwater (13-0): Tornadoes do have a preseason loss to St. Petersburg, but otherwise they have been rolling. They play Lakewood on Thursday, then Indian Rocks Christian and the Academy of Holy Names tournament over the holidays.
4. Calvary Christian (10-1): The Warriors’ loss, a close one, came to PHU. Tampa Catholic and Clearwater Central Catholic end the first half of the season for the Warriors, who should do some big things in the new year.
5. Gibbs (8-4): Gladiators are proving they can play with just about anyone. With Bria Bostick (18 ppg) and Shalbria Murphy (12.2 ppg) they can stay in most games.
6. Countryside (11-4): Cougars are coming off nice wins over Tarpon Springs and East Lake. A tough matchup against a much improved Northeast awaits Friday night.
7. Dixie Hollins (9-3): A big win over 6A-10 foe Mitchell put the Rebels on top in the district. Meagan Thomas continues to light it up, but she is getting some help from Kinza Khan and Haley Martz.
Knocking on the door: Northeast (11-5); Admiral Farragut (8-3)
Boys
1. Gibbs (8-1): Defense played a huge role in a 46-41 win over Oldsmar Christian, which boasts several major college prospects. Gladiators’ only loss was by a point to state-ranked Daytona Beach Father Lopez.
2. St. Petersburg (7-0): The schedule has not presented much of a challenge so far with the Green Devils winning each of their past six games by 20 points or more.
3. Largo (6-0): Though they are undefeated, the Packers could rest guard Donavan Hale a few games in the next two weeks so he can recover from a bruised muscle in his knee.
4. Seminole (8-1): Marco Behori put on a show, scoring 12 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Warhawks past Tarpon Springs on Wednesday.
5. Lakewood (4-5): Brutal early-season schedule is the main reason for so many losses. But the Spartans will get better now that they have a full squad with the return of football players.
6. Shorecrest (8-1): The Chargers had a big win against district rival Calvary Christian last week before losing their first game to private school power Berkeley Prep.
7. Calvary Christian (8-2): The up-and-coming Warriors had their unbeaten streak end with losses to two quality teams in Shorecrest and Poinciana this past week.
Knocking on the door: Tarpon Springs (9-2)
