Player of the Year: OH Daniele Green, Sr., Mitchell
Why we picked her: The North Suncoast didn’t have a better team, and the Mustangs didn’t have a better player. Backed by six other seniors she’d played with since middle school, Green led an attack that took her team to the 6A region final and netted Mitchell’s best season. The senior finished with 327 kills, 347 digs, 56 aces and 30 blocks. Green only seemed to improve as the season grew long, increasing her hitting percentage in Mitchell’s last few matches.
Most impressive accomplishment: Green had a season-high 21 kills against Anclote, one of the top teams in the area. That, combined with 28 digs, helped the Mustangs hang on during a tight five-set match.
Future plans: Green wants to stay home the next two years. She’d like to play on PHCC’s team for the first two years of her collegiate career, then hopes to transfer to a larger state school. She recently went to tryouts at PHCC and has a campus visit in January. She plans to study economics or business.
Did you know? Green tried out a variety of sports as a kid. Her decision to stick with volleyball was mostly because of her older sister, who played at East Lake. “I just wanted to follow in her footsteps,” Green said.
Coach of the Year
Nikki Pollock, Fivay. The first-year coach had a lot to live up to when she took over for Linda McQuade. McQuade took the Falcons to their best season in school history last year, and Pollock kept that momentum going. Despite losing Times player of the year Toni Imbimbo, now at PHCC, Pollock repeated last year’s overall win-loss record, and the Falcons climbed to the region finals after a perfect season in a talent-heavy district.
First team
MH Aaliyah Anderson, Sr., Anclote: An honorable mention on last year’s all-North Suncoast team with Niedermeyer, Anderson returned to lead the Sharks’ attack with 262 kills.
MH Marissa Niedermeyer, Jr., Anclote: Niedermeyer’s 259 kills put her near the top of Anclote’s offensive roster. Niedermeyer and Anderson’s combined attack made the Sharks one of the most dangerous contenders in a talented Class 5A-8 district.
MB Ashleigh Nemetz, Sr., Fivay: Nemetz was one of the most versatile players on the North Suncoast, with 272 kills, 66 solo blocks and 58 aces.
OH Grace Olsen, Sr., Wiregrass Ranch: The energetic senior’s 331 kills made her one of the top offensive players in both counties.
OH Alyssa Mathis, Jr., Bishop McLaughlin: The San Diego State commit led her record-breaking team in kills (237) and blocks (71).
OH Briannah Nemetz, Sr., Fivay: Showing off a playing style completely different than her sister’s, Briannah nevertheless put up similar high numbers with 258 kills.
S Jordyn Mattos, Jr., Fivay: In her third year with the Falcons, the junior led her team and much of the North Suncoast in assists (779) and was also a leader in digs and kills.
Lib Izah Deang, Sr., Wiregrass Ranch: Deang was a powerful force across the court, with 423 serve receptions and 368 digs.
