Offensive player of the year
Artavis Scott, ATH, Sr., East Lake
Why we picked him: The Clemson commitment and top-ranked player in the Tampa Bay Times HomeTeam 100 showed glimpses of what was to come in the spring, when he scored on two kick returns and two long receptions against Osceola. He predicted a deep postseason run and did his part to deliver. Though he was listed as a receiver, Scott did a little bit of everything. He was a running back, rushing for 729 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was a dependable target in the passing game with a team-high 37 catches for 542 yards and five touchdowns. And when opponents dared kick to him, Scott made them pay with 428 return yards and four touchdowns. Most of all, he provided the offense with an electrifying play whenever needed in a season during which East Lake scored a county-best 603 points and went to the state semifinals for the first time.
Most impressive accomplishment: In the Class 7A state semifinal against nationally ranked Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer, Scott nearly willed the Eagles to a come-from-behind win. Trailing 24-10 in the fourth quarter, Scott helped threw a touchdown pass to George Campbell. Scott then intercepted a pass to set up a tying touchdown. For good measure, Scott also had 80 yards rushing and a touchdown. It wasn’t enough, though, as the Eagles lost 31-24 in overtime.
Future plans: Scott graduated early from East Lake. He will play in the Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 4, then head to Clemson the following day to start his college career.
Did you know? Scott is clairvoyant. He said he is always two steps ahead and predicts things before they happen. “It’s a gift from God,” he said. The only thing he could not predict was the outcome of the 7A state semifinal. “I can’t lie. I really thought we were going to win that game,” he said.
Defensive player of the year
Devin Abraham, DB, Sr., East Lake
Why we picked him: The three-year starter studies game video and often acts as another coach on the field. He recorded a combined nine interceptions the past two seasons, but he was not able to make much happen once he got his hands on the ball, with just one touchdown entering this season. That all changed, as Abraham had a team-best six interceptions and a fumble recovery, scoring five times and recording a safety. He also was a special teams demon, blocking four punts and three field goals. He even had a touchdown reception on offense to force a tie in the fourth quarter of the Class 7A state semifinal.
Most impressive accomplishment: On a team loaded with playmakers, Abraham finished fifth in scoring with 38 points. Besides having a nose for the ball and the end zone, Abraham was also adept at making stops, finishing fourth on the team in tackles with 74. His most impressive tackle came in the postseason, preventing a touchdown by stopping a Pinellas Park receiver at the 1-yard line in what Abraham described as the best form tackle he had this season.
Future plans: Like teammate Artavis Scott, Abraham graduated early. He has already committed to USF and will start classes the first week of January.
Did you know? Abraham was originally left-handed. But his grandmother believed that was the hand of the devil. So she reprogrammed him to become right-handed. “I can barely even use my left hand anymore,” he said.
Coach of the year
Bob Hudson, East Lake: Sure, the Eagles were talented and had made deep runs in the playoffs before. But no one had any idea the team would be this dominant. Hudson got the most out of them, guiding the program to its first undefeated regular season, most wins (13) and the first state semifinal appearance.
