Bishop McLaughlin’s football team will no longer compete in Class 3A, District 4, after just one season in the district.
Athletic director Joe Jasinski said the Hurricanes will again be independent, rejoining the Sunshine State Athletic Conference.
“The SSAC, which we used to play in, is under new leadership and really growing,” Jasinski said.
He added that schools in the SSAC are more similar to Bishop McLaughlin in terms of enrollment and growing football programs. He said many opponents in 3A-4 had rosters double the size of the Hurricanes’.
“Our goal is to get to that point in the future, but we are not there yet,” Jasinski said.
The Hurricanes went 0-5 in district play in 2013.
“We decided the SSAC was the best place for us as we continue to build toward achieving that goal,” Jasinski said.
