A few recent recruiting updates from Hillsborough and the North Suncoast:
Miami became the latest in-state program to offer Jefferson ATH Deiondre Porter. As a quarterback, the USF commit accounted for a state-best 4,698 yards and 53 touchdowns to earn all-Suncoast offensive player of the year honors from the Tampa Bay Times. The senior picked up an offer from Florida earlier this week.
Wyoming went on a short scholarship offer spree. The Cowboys gave the first Football Bowl Subdivision offer to two Tampa Bay players – Land O’Lakes DE/LB Shaheed Salmon and Jefferson WR/DB Chavez Pownell.
The 5-foot-11 Pownell was a first-team all-Suncoast talent after recording five interceptions and 809 receiving yards as a senior. Salmon, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound pass rusher had a breakout senior year for the Gators with 117 tackles (21.5 for a loss) and 8.5 sacks.
Wyoming also offered Pasco ATH Malik Johns. The 5-foot-11 Samford commit scored 22 touchdowns as a senior to help the Pirates make it back to the playoffs.
Springstead OL/DL Shane Wiggins picked up his first offer, from Cheyney University, a Division II program in Cheyney, Pa. Wiggins’ 73 tackles and six sacks as a senior helped the Eagles to their best season in school history.
