Pinellas Park’s Pierre Johnson committed to Wofford a week before taking his official visit to the school, Patriots coach Kenny Crawford said.

Johnson originally was scheduled to take his visit this weekend but had to postpone it because he is going on a field trip with Pinellas Park’s criminal justice program.

“Pierre said he wanted to get his commitment out of the way before going on this school trip and taking his visit,” Crawford said. “Wofford was the first school to offer him and stayed with him the whole time.”

This past season, Johnson showed off his versatility, rushing for 1,264 yards and  catching 17 passes for 326 yards to help the Patriots finish 10-2 and advance to the Class 7A region semifinals. He was a first-team selection on the Tampa Bay Times’ all-Pinellas County team.

Johnson, who has a 4.0 GPA and scored 23 on his ACT, picked Wofford over other high academic schools such as Georgetown and Lehigh.

Wofford competes in the Division I-AA Sothern Conference and is coached by Mike Ayers, who just finished his 26th season.
