Basketball super 7
Records through Wednesday
Boys
1. Tampa Prep (16-2): The Terrapins’ five-game win streak includes victories over Berkeley Prep, Jesuit and Brooks-DeBartolo — all by at least 16 points.
2. Berkeley Prep (16-2): Craig Bowman has somewhat quietly put up five consecutive games with at least 10 points, including 22 in last week’s win over Tampa Catholic.
3. Wharton (15-2): The Wildcats have a big Class 8A, District 7 game tonight against Newsome, which Wharton beat 55-54 on a JC Ulbrich buzzer beater last month.
4. East Bay (14-2): Anton Crutcher is averaging 19 points and 7.5 rebounds over his last six games for an Indians team that looks like the favorite in Class 7A, District 7.
5. Lennard (15-3): Gary Hector and the Longhorns have rattled off five consecutive double-digit wins since falling to Tampa Prep on the day after Christmas.
6. Jesuit (12-6): The Tigers are getting hot, with back-to-back impressive wins over Robinson and Tampa Catholic. Kyle Sahlsten drained nine 3-pointers in those victories.
7. Tampa Catholic (12-7): A two-game losing skid is a concern for the Crusaders, who can still hang with Berkeley in Class 4A, District 10.
In the conversation: Plant (13-5), Jefferson (16-5), Strawberry Crest (15-4)
Girls
1. Strawberry Crest (18-2): With a 77-10 win against Durant last week, the Chargers proved they can do a whole lot more than shoot the basketball.
2. Steinbrenner (20-3): The Warriors dropped a game to top-ranked Strawberry Crest, and they’ll have another test tonight against a peaking Freedom squad.
3. Freedom (18-3): The Patriots haven’t skipped a beat since a Dec. 12 loss to Steinbrenner, and they extended their win streak to nine games with a pair of hard-fought district victories.
4. Seffner Christian (15-3): Seffner Christian might not play the same level of competition as some of the other teams in these rankings, but they don’t have any issues beating opponents with ease.
5. Tampa Bay Tech (18-3): The Titans are cruising along on a seven-game win streak, and their next big challenge might not come until the district tournament against the rival Chargers.
6. Armwood (18-4): The Hawks haven’t allowed more than 15 points in their past three games, winning by a margin of 158-39.
7. Sickles (16-5): The Gryphons have the privilege of playing in one of the toughest districts around, but they have held their own, despite a recent loss to Freedom.
In the conversation: Riverview (10-5), Jefferson (16-5), Academy of the Holy Names (16-6), Hillsborough (13-9)
