Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover, then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span the Saturday, Jan. 11 through Friday, Jan. 17. The winners get a T-shirt and bragging rights over every other school in the area. Read up on the rest of our nominees online, then vote until noon Monday.
Female nominees
Madison Cox, Cambridge Christian soccer: The University of Tampa recruit notched a hat trick and knocked in the winning goal with two minutes left in a 3-2 district semifinal win over Seffner Christian that pushed her team to the postseason.
Danielle Gottwik, Mitchell soccer: The senior’s control of the midfield in the 4A-8 district semifinals helped the unbeaten Mustangs to a 4-0 win against Wiregrass Ranch and secured a region berth. Gottwik, who had three assists vs. the Bulls, also had a goal in the 5-0 final win over Sickles.
Rita Jarque, Nature Coast basketball: The junior was a menace both on offense and defense against Pasco, helping NCT lock up the top spot in Class 5A, District 7. She scored 16 points and had 19 rebounds against the Pirates.
Alexis Mouton, Palm Harbor University soccer: The Alabama recruit provided most of the scoring with seven goals in three games to help the Hurricanes win their 11th district title in the past 12 seasons.
Danielle Putnam, Osceola soccer: She scored the winner four minutes into the second half in the Class 4A, District 10 final as the Warriors knocked off rival, and top seed, Seminole 1-0.
Cristina Snyder, Academy of Holy Names basketball: The senior guard hit a school-record nine 3-pointers for the Jaguars in a 53-37 win against Indian Rocks Christian on Jan. 11. Snyder finished the night with 27 points, 9-of-13 from behind the arc.
Male nominees
Luke Calleja, Hudson basketball: Calleja had a game-high 20 points, with six 3-pointers, against Land O’Lakes. He’s averaged 19 points per game this season.
Juwan Durham, Tampa Prep basketball: The elite 2016 recruit rattled off three consecutive triple doubles against Dunedin, Berkeley Prep and Brooks-DeBartolo. His 24-point, 17-rebounds, 15-block game helped the Terrapins blow out Berkeley last week.
Christian Knight, Steinbrenner soccer: The senior goalkeeper recorded his 10th shutout of the season Friday when Steinbrenner beat Tampa Bay Tech 5-0. Knight has allowed just nine goals in 16 games for the Warriors.
Nathan Love, Wesley Chapel wrestling: The 182-pounder went undefeated in seven matches at Nature Coast’s Bill Combs Duals to move to 31-3 on the season.
Josh Page, East Lake soccer: Page spent two weeks on the bench due to a groin injury. He returned Friday night and scored three goals in a 4-0 win over Northeast in the PCAC championship game, the second straight PCAC title for the Eagles.
Kamen Wilmington, Northside Christian wrestling: The freshman, who has wrestled since sixth grade, recorded his 100th career victory at the St. Petersburg City Championships. Wilmington also was named MVP with a dominant performance in the 138-pound class.
