SEFFNER — For Armwood, it is time to move on to the next challenge. For Mitchell, a season of what could have been ended.
Armwood (25-4) cruised to a 56-30 victory against injury-riddled Mitchell (14-12) in a Class 6A region quarterfinal. The Hawks advance to play Dixie Hollins on Tuesday.
Alyssa Nieves scored 20, Kiana King 14 and Keaundra Ivory 12 as Armwood led all the way. The Hawks shot only 29 percent (22 of 75), but the Mustangs had more turnovers (42) than field-goal attempts (31).
“We’ve got to tighten up all those inside shots we missed,” Armwood coach Patrick Kelly said. “We counted at least 10 breakaway layups or fastbreak layups that we missed. The competition is going to get stiffer as we go, and those shots are going to count. The effort was there, but not the execution.”
All 12 Armwood players got in the game. Nieves got all her points on field goals, including four 3-pointers.
Ashley Lewis led Mitchell with 10 points. The Mustangs were plagued by injuries throughout the season: Hannah Kriston (broken foot) and Regan Petika (high ankle sprain) were limited, and point guard Kim Knudsen also missed time.
“It was like bumps in the road,” Mitchell coach Jacob Tavo said. “Every time we got going … bang, bump in the road.”
