HomeTeam Hot Shots
A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.
Female Hot Shot: Ashley McWilliams, Holy Names
Sport: Basketball
Skinny: The senior guard had a triple double (18 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists) in the Jaguars’ 59-51 overtime playoff win against Lakeland McKeel on Thursday. McKeel sent the game to overtime with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but McWilliams — who averages a team-high 13 points per game — continued to step up for AHN in the extra minutes, leading the Jaguars’ to a region quarterfinal win. Holy Names advances to tonight’s Class 4A region semifinal against Tampa Catholic.
Male Hot Shot: Gary Hector, Lennard
Sport: Basketball
Skinny: Hector led the Longhorns in scoring (19 points) and steals (six) while adding seven rebounds in the Class 6A, District 9 semifinals against Chamberlain. The 6-foot-1 senior guard sank all six of his free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime — including the two game-sealing ones in the closing seconds. For good measure, he added 16 points, six rebounds and five steals on Saturday against Jefferson to seal the first district championship in program history. He’ll try to get another school first — a playoff victory — Thursday in a home game against Mitchell in the 6A region quarterfinals.
