TRINITY — Cold weather didn’t seem to hinder the times of the athletes in Friday night’s sixth annual Mitchell Invitational.
Wiregrass Ranch took the boys’ crown with 82 points and strong performances in the middle-distance events.
Robert Rodriguez nabbed the lone individual event title for the Bulls with his first-place finish in the 200-meter run, crossing the line in 23.6 seconds. Wiregrass also won the 100-meter relay.
Springstead senior Bobby Harris has dominated the high jump both locally and at the state level for the past few years, and Friday was no exception.
Harris took first in two events at Mitchell, winning the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and long jump (20 feet, 8 inches).
East Lake’s Chigozie Atavwigho pushed his program to a strong finish in the standings with two victories as well, finishing first in the 110 hurdles (15.7 seconds) and 300 hurdles (41.1 seconds).
Troy Shea, representing the host Mustangs, won the 800 in 2:05 to lead the distance runners. Gulf’s Wesley Best (1,600) and James Raymond (3,200) rounded out the distance champions on the boys’ side. Raymond also set a meet record with his time of 4:41.
East Lake walked away with the girls’ team title with 114.5 points on the shoulders of a triple jump championship from Ramiah Vickers (32 feet, 11.5 inches).
It was the lone individual event victory for the Eagles, who knocked Wiregrass Ranch from the top spot.
Springstead senior Wilena Little, a Florida International commit, repeated her long jump title with a leap of 17 feet, 1/2 inch. She was unable to repeat her victory in the 200, which was won by River Ridge’s Darian Davis (27.5 seconds).
Mitchell also got individual wins from Taylor Anderson in the pole vault and Emily Kerns in the 1,600. Anderson cleared 10 feet in the vault, and Kerns set a meet record with a time of 5:17.
