Player of the year: F Alexis Mouton, Sr., Palm Harbor University
Why we picked her:
Defense has always been Palm Harbor University’s strong suit, and this season was no different. The Hurricanes allowed just four goals during the regular season and were undefeated. Trouble was, the offense was not coming through. The inability to score resulted in five ties and dropped PHU to the third seed in one of the toughest districts in the state. That’s when Mouton went on a tear, scoring a combined 10 goals in six district and playoff games to lead the Hurricanes to the Class 8A state semifinals, where they lost 1-0 to Vero Beach. It was the first time PHU had advanced to the state semifinals during Mouton’s career at the school. Her scoring binge continued in the Pinellas-Hillsborough senior all-star game with two goals that erased a 2-0 deficit and sent the game into overtime, with Pinellas eventually winning.
Most impressive accomplishment: Mouton had never scored three goals in a game prior to the district tournament. She accomplished that in two straight wins against Alonso and East Lake that secured a playoff berth. The win against the Eagles in the district semifinals was key considering PHU had been knocked out of the playoffs by its rival the previous two seasons.
Did you know? Mouton always waits until she is out of the car to put on her shin guards, socks and shoes, regardless of whether she is late for a practice or a game. She always puts the left shoe on before the right one and wears her hair in a ponytail with a braid before each game.
Future plans: Mouton has signed with Alabama and will play soccer there in the fall. She currently is on the Tampa Bay under-18 club team and will be playing in the state cup starting March 28.

Coach of the year
John Planamenta, Palm Harbor University
: Playing in one of the toughest districts in the state, Planamenta guided the Hurricanes (18-1-5) through an undefeated regular season despite some early-season injuries. In the district tournament and postseason, PHU survived a brutal bracket to make the state semifinals for the first time since 2010.
