A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.
Female Hot Shot: Corynn Miner, Farragut
Sport: Softball
Skinny: Last year, Miner started her high school career as a freshman and gave the Blue Jackets something it had been lacking: an ace. “Corynn kind of changed the whole story for us,” coach Linda Derk said. This season, Miner has the Blue Jackets eyeing a postseason berth. In a pivotal Class 3A, District 10 matchup last week, Miner mowed down St. Petersburg Catholic batters with efficiency, finishing with a one-hit shutout and nine strikeouts in a 2-0 victory.
Male Hot Shot: Flabio Garcia, Strawberry Crest
Sport: Baseball
Skinny: The senior rightfielder helped lead the Chargers to their second straight Saladino Tournament semifinal appearance. He went 8-for-13, including three doubles and four RBIs, while scoring four runs. Garcia owns a .300 batting average and leads the Chargers in extra-base hits. “He is a big hitter,” coach Eric Beattie said during the tournament’s pool play. “He’s a four-year player for us, and he’s gotten better every year.”
