Scores
Inspiration Academy 6, River Ridge 0
Dunedin 4, Calvary Christian 1
Pitcher of the day
Even though he walked as many as he totaled coming in (five), Inspiration senior Payton Jenkins (now 6-1) kept River Ridge hitters off balance. He threw no-hit ball over the first 42/3 innings. He finished with a three-hitter and six strikeouts, giving him 54 strikeouts over just 47 innings.
Hitters of the day
Dunedin leadoff hitter Trevor Jensen went 2-for-3 and walked and reached on an error. He even turned an easy first-inning pickoff by Calvary Christian’s Collin Booten into a hustle stolen base and later scored. … Inspiration senior Currie Gauvreau (2-for-3) had a two-run double in the fifth inning while classmate Jacob Heiser scored a pair with a double the inning before. … Leadoff man Harrison Keslar drew three walks, the only River Ridge batter to reach more than once.
Defensive gems of the day
Dunedin’s base coaches gave Logan Jones the green light on a fourth-inning bomb, but Calvary Christian turned it red. Centerfielder Jake Rothwell hit shortstop Graham Hoffman, and the freshman completed the relay by throwing a strike to third baseman John Chiaramente that nipped Jones by a half-step. … Gliding to his right, Inspiration first baseman Heiser extended his 6-foot-4 frame and pulled in Rocco Iervasi’s scalded two-out liner in the sixth, ending River Ridge’s best opportunity to score.
Dugout chatter
“Normally we don’t play back-to-back games. But I don’t think (Tuesday’s win over Countryside) was too taxing. If that’s true, we shouldn’t show up (today). Our mind-set was not what we needed it to be. — River Ridge coach Jack Hamko on if his team struggled playing for the second straight day.
“We moved Trevor (Jensen) from the three-hole to leadoff to maximize his trips to the plate. More trips, more offense and more wins. Trevor’s our motor.” — Dunedin coach Ron Sexton on Jensen, who has reached base in seven of his eight plate appearances in the tourney.
